Summary: Monobutyl phthalate (MBP) is a primary metabolite of an environmental endocrine disruptor dibutyl phthalate, which is a threat to ecosystems. In this study, Y. Tao with coworkers has studies MBP effects on energy metabolism in the zebrafish respiratory system (gills). Authors show that MBP is acutely toxic by destroying mitochondria structure and function, disrupting ATP synthesis and ion transport, and leads to cell death. HoloMonitor M4 was used to study gill epithelial cell morphology changes exposure to various concentrations of MBP.
