Summary: In this study, a highly water-soluble organic dye i.e. sodium (E)-3,3′-((4-(2-(3-methylbenzo[d]thiazol-3-ium-2-yl)vinyl)phenyl)azanediyl)dipropionate iodide (dye-A1), was synthesized and served as a hydrogel polymerization photo-initiator. This water-soluble initiator, at a low concentration of just 0.01 weight%, demonstrated a high photo initiation ability, with some hydrogel formulations achieving nearly 100% double bond conversion under sunlight. To investigate dye-A1 cytotoxicity, HoloMonitor was used to monitor cell proliferation, division, motility and morphology after dye-A1 treatment. The results showed that dye-A1did not cause any cytotoxicity and therefore can support the growth, proliferation, and survival of cells, demonstrating excellent biocompatibility.
